The Trophy Room – Augusta National Golf Club

If you are lucky enough, one day you will visit the Augusta National Golf Club – best time is, of course, during the Masters each spring.
Located to the right of the golf course side clubhouse entry, the room is a treasure trove of some of golf’s most coveted collectibles. For example, on one side of the marble fireplace is a display that showcases the 11 clubs that Bobby Jones used to win the Grand Slam in 1930. Historians will note that the 12th club is Jones’ famous putter, Calamity Jane which he used until 1924.
On the other side of the prestigious fireplace is a diplay of clubs from a virtual Who’s Who of historic Masters champions. Imagine seeing the 4-wood and ball that Gene Sarazen used to make his double eagle on No. 15 in 1935 – wouldn’t that put a chill down your spin!
Then there is a fine collection of busts of Bobby Jones, and Clifford Roberts. One the wall you can spend hours looking at the portraits of Jones, Roberts, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. These works of art remind all of us priviledged to gain access to the Trophy Room of the club’s history. In one curious historic footnote, it is rumored that no matter where you stand in the room, the eyes on the paintings are following you. Creepy or cool? I’ll let you decide.
I’ve been thinking about creating my own room to show off my golf trophies. OK, OK it only needs to be a nook – maybe even just a shelf. But you get the idea. I know I’ll never have a trophy room like that at Augusta National Golf Club but a guy can dream.
